The double transfusion yesterday has really helped her energy level, and she was able to stomach a half dose of percocet.

We're making the arrangements to come home tomorrow. That means a rental of a wheelchair, ramp, self-elevating chair, toilet lift, and a bunch of grabbers and things. Much of it will be delivered today, and I'll pick up the rest from one of the many local shops.

Some stuff I didn't know - after a hip replacement, you should never cross your legs (other than at the ankles) again. That apparently applies forever. Biking is also an issue, because your not supposed to swing your leg over the bar for a long time.

The room is still pretty noisy, so sleeping over is a challenge. I've been playing on my laptop, so I've been occupied. She's been sleeping a lot, so there hasn't been as much Kindle as I had anticipated.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-61743374042615578162012-07-04T06:18:00.001-07:002012-07-04T06:18:07.759-07:00Half way there...It looks like Jen will go home on Friday. There was some talk of leaving to go to a rehab facility on Friday as a halfway, but the docs said that she'd have to go to a full nursing home. Since that prospect is unappealing, she'll come home instead.

She's less nauseated, and slept very well. She looks and feels much better than yesterday. The only downer for today is that she's going to have a transfusion to replace some of the blood that's sloshing around. She'll do her initial "hobble around the floor" physical therapy in a few minutes.

I slept on the padded bench. I've been trying to get my Atari ST emulator to work on the laptop. No success yet.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-38716376706621280922012-07-03T14:23:00.001-07:002012-07-03T14:23:18.338-07:00Moving on up!Jen had a decent night. The hip is pretty good. The pain medications are making her nauseated, so there hasn't been much physical therapy today. Even with the post-operation pain, she's said that she's happy to be rid of the arthritic hip pains.

She was transferred to Room 1024 (on the 10th floor) from the 4th floor. We're both glad she's out of the ICU. I was supposed to sleep in her room last night. However, it was so loud in the ICU (beeps and alarms, etc.) that Jen sent me home at 11pm so I could get some sleep before my big morning hearing today.

Jen's mom and Jake got to stop in and visit this afternoon. I'll sleep over tonight, and the family will visit tomorrow morning while I go home and walk the dogs, etc.

So far we have no idea on how long the hospital stay will be.
The doctor said everything went fine. They haven't invited me back yet. I presume she'll be asleep for a while. Since she's got sleep apnea and will be wearing her CPAP mask, she'll probably go to the ICU after recovery and before going to her private room.
So far, so good. Good wifi, fresh decaf coffee in the waiting room, and people generally wash their hands in pre-op. I saw a doctor I sued in a previous case (contract claim, not malpractice), but I ducked into a corner and missed him.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-15820096915908669252012-07-01T19:19:00.001-07:002012-07-01T19:19:32.485-07:00Back in the hospital; new story, same place...

I'll be updating the progress of Jen's July 2, 2012 hip replacement surgery from this website. She's scheduled for surgery Monday morning to replace her right hip. She needs the left hip too, but one at a time...

We expect three to five days in Aventura Hospital, followed by a week in a rehab facility. Jen's Mom will be staying in our house with Jake and the dogs, and I'll be sleeping at the hospital. Stay tuned...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-38489684440303714972011-12-28T18:37:00.000-08:002011-12-28T18:40:35.727-08:00Hanging at homeJen got a cast put on yesterday. It is supposed to take six weeks to fully heal, but we go back in three weeks for more x-rays. We have a wheelchair and a walker, but right now it's mostly sitting in bed with the occasional foray into the living room via wheelchair. Meanwhile, I've been cooking the one dish I know how to make - baked breaded chicken. The family either has to love it, or learn to love it. I also made confetti cupcakes, but haven't frosted them yet. That will be her snack treat during the next session of 8+ hours of reality TV.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-22280525990912997992011-12-26T06:32:00.000-08:002011-12-26T06:39:29.482-08:00Still waiting for official orthopedic treatmentJen's been resting in the house. I decided to upgrade my lifestyle, and have a “supreme” frozen pizza instead of the regular one. I’ve been listening to a ton of classical and jazz lps over the past few days, and hangin’ with the dog. Right now I’m taking a music break and watching Kill Bill 1 and 2. The movie introduction says that viewer discretion is not just recommended, but required.

Jake and Jen went to Gainesville for medical tests, and then to Jen’s parents house in Fernandina Beach. They come back tomorrow.

Work has been very busy. Some biking, but not a ton. Two day, 160 mile bike trip coming up next weekend.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-4944841214830836552010-10-20T18:18:00.001-07:002010-10-20T18:18:54.284-07:00Back Home
Happy to be home, even though I have two big hearing days coming up. It was an excellent trip-work wise.

I’m predictable, because there’s no pre-flight meal that’s good enough to keep me from also stopping at an airport Nathan’s for a dog with mustard and kraut.

I came home to start on a box of 90 old classical lps that I got for 9.00 plus 20.00 shipping. Today is the 1956 mono recording of some Vivaldi chamber concertos (Milan Chamber Orchestra led by Newell Jenkins) on “Washington Records”, which appears to have been the “educational” affiliate of the Riverside Jazz label. While mono doesn’t stir the depths of the soul, it provides a minimum level of fidelity that exceeds a bad album or a staticy radio transmission. It sounds darn clean if you play it back via mono (in my case, a pair of y splitters on my second turntable which cut the stereo signal to mono and then send it to both inputs)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-84033589197314782502010-10-20T04:20:00.001-07:002010-10-20T04:20:56.015-07:00From the plane
The biggest problem with the Zune is that when you’re on the road, there’s no possible way to obtain a power cord if you forget it at home. So I’m stuck on the plane with only the in-flight tunes, so I might as well do a blog update for later upload. I’m on my way to DC at 10pm for an early morning meeting. I hate leaving home overnight, but there’s no option. On the other hand, I doubt the dog will call me up in the middle of the night to tell me he wants to go outside. The family can’t have me gone for too long, because I’m the point person for fourth grade math homework answers.

I’m excited about the trip, because it’s a big new case with an interesting topic. I got the call from the client on Saturday afternoon while I was in the middle of a 65 mile bike ride from Miami to West Palm Beach. I had to tell him I’d call back in a few hours.

Between the work trips and the fact that I fall asleep around 9:30pm when I get home, there’s a backlog of vinyl lps waiting for their listen. I need to bear down and put in the time, but the weekend weather has been so nice that I’ve been either riding or taking a drive with the top down.

We’re in varying stages of health. Jen’s had some nagging foot problems, and Jake’s friends have been sharing the same head cold for two weeks. I therefore have sworn to not complain about any physical maladies. One weird physical development is that I cannot do floor exercises with my trainer because if I lay down for an exercise it takes me several minutes to lose dizziness after I sit up. I don’t really understand this development, because I wake up from sleep just fine. The good news is that I now do less ab crunch routines – which is nice.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-60515725542288436502010-10-10T11:18:00.001-07:002010-10-10T11:18:41.496-07:00Lazy Blogger
I can get back to blogging – for today anyway – because I have the house to myself. That means hanging out on the couch in the position of honor and listening to records with the laptop on half my lap and the dog on the other half. Jake and Jen are at a birthday party, and they left for the party before I got back from my long Sunday bike ride. Normally I’m not couch-eligible, because Jake claims the main TV and the couch. (My the last couple of classical albums that I attempted to listen to in the den had a Phineas and Ferb background track.) I bought him a Mac Mini (he said he needed a Mac for his Multimedia class at school) and installed it in his room, so that may incrementally increase couch availability.

Everything is a-ok. I still have some nagging pains, but I get to ride when I can. Jen’s also got some nagging pains (arthritis, back pain) but things haven’t been too bad. Jake had a bit of a cold and swollen glands, but we’re watching that situation closely. As long as we’re calamity free – I consider that a-ok.

I went to the velodrome yesterday, for the first time in two years. It feels good on the track bike, but I have no power. My calves are still very strong (I can lift the whole rack on the calf-lift machine at the gym) but my quads and glutes are fairly weak. That means I can sustain enough pace for my long and enjoyable rides, but I don’t have the top-end speed of my friends/competitors/adversaries (i.e., the guys). In the old days, if I was a little slower at the top speed than a competitor, I would simply launch a half-mile early and see if I could drop them before the final sprint point. Now, everybody does that to me, and I have no response. I aspire to have enough stamina and power to make it to the final sprint before getting dropped.

Music of the Moment – I’ve been listening to some old Eric Dolphy albums (the “Out” series). There’s a lot of variety. I especially recommend “Out There”, which features Ron Carter on cello (instead of his normal bass). I’ve also been listening to some Hillary Hahn violin works. She’s exceptional.

Guilty pleasure music moment – Jen picked out a “Shadowfax” sealed lp when we went to the record store yesterday. She thought it sounded familiar and that she saw them in Tallahassee 25 years ago. It’s new age (they won’t list them in the jazz guidebooks), but it really does sound great on the main system.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-30751276264786393722010-09-29T10:52:00.000-07:002010-09-29T11:13:06.751-07:00Not much of a tropical stormIt looks like the threatened tropical storm won't do much damage. This is good, because I don't have the physical wherewithal to put up our hurricane shutters. We have the old "slat" kind, and we only have enough to cover 2 of our 20 windows. I guess we could have sprung for some nice roll-down shutters, but we got a pool and a yip dog instead. Now that we have a pool, I can threaten to throw the outdoor patio furniture into the pool as a hurricane precaution. Bryan Norcross says you aren't supposed to do this, but at least now I have the opportunity.

Jake had a good week. He didn't miss school last week (although he missed it yesterday). Jen was busy on a bunch of errands, but nothing that merits blog notation. I puttered about at work and did my morning bike rides. I would have blogged sooner, but there wasn't much going on.

One weekend disappointment. We took Jake and a friend to Tropical Chinese for dim sum, and he hated it. Very disappointing, because that takes it out of our arsenal for easy weekend food.

On the other hand, I'm always happy to blog about my battles with the stereo. The pre-amp section on the new/old McIntosh amp is dying, so now I'm using my old Pioneer receiver as a preamp. That means there's even more stuff hooked up, and more stuff lights up at night. Cool. I had to order some cables so I could string up a second turntable for mono playback. The McIntosh has a "mono" switch and two turntable hookups, but my modern (1990) Pioneer receiver has neither.

I have decided to skip/defer the two fall 70.3 Ironman events to which I had registered. I'm just not there yet. I'm switching my December Palm Beach Marathon entry from a full-marathon to a half-marathon, and even that is tenuous. On the other hand, I get stronger every day on the bike. I'm not recovered, but I still get mad if I'm not in the lead group. I started working with my trainer yesterday, and it hurt like heck. It's a necessary evil, at least until I get symmetrical.

New music pick of the week - Doobie Brothers, World Gone Crazy (2010). It just came out. It sounds like it's from 1975, in a good way. More Tom Johnston vocals, less Michael McDonald blue-eyed soul.

Old music pick of the week - David Oistrakh, Violin Concertos by Prokofiev, Leclair, Locatell (1955). I’d say quality exercise, but I haven’t done anything but cycle.

Yesterday I proved to myself that I can win a sprint if everybody else does something silly. Our Saturday bike store group ride was coming up to the final end sprint (against a headwind). I was second in line up front – I figured I’d lead out the group. I had one person home up hard on my left, and another come up hard on my right. I sprinted a bit and ended up behind two guys who were sprinting side-by-side (rather than single file). They completely blocked the wind for me, and I just waited until they tired and blew right between them for the win. I don’t have my old horsepower back (I can barely hit 31-32 mph), but I ain’t stupid. Here's a video of the ride (final sprint at the 11:05 mark):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3HeGqUyibM&feature=player_embedded

Today I went for a hot and windy 75 mile ride with my friends on my 40 pound fixie. Fun, but I’m pooped.

Jake had play dates all weekend, and had a great time. Jen and I had a date night at the Marlins game. Unfortunately, it was “cow bell night”, so it was deafening all night.

My elbow and bicep are still really stiff and swollen from my Wednesday workout. Hopefully it resolves soon. The ribs haven’t been bad, and the shoulder is down to about 8 Advils a day.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-34834543216928071252010-09-16T18:46:00.001-07:002010-09-16T18:46:24.705-07:00Starting the Advil early
I went to the orthopedist yesterday, and he said I could resume working with my trainer. I’m supposed to concentrate on stretching rather than weights, and I’m supposed to let pain be my guide. The docs says that I don’t need to do the deep massage stuff that caused me to quit going to physical therapy.

I went to the gym for a workout circuit attempt. I did some machine-based lifting and some of my old core sit-up-ish exercises. It turns out I don’t have any core strength, and not much strength anywhere else. I guess I’ll also add some lower body workouts to the previous pre-injury routine. I didn’t previously do lower body stuff, because I didn’t need to. Now I do. I start back with my trainer on Tuesday, and it’s gonna hurt.

It was a busy week at work, and Jake’s tummy’s been on and off, so not much home news to report. I did fly to Key West on Tuesday. I flew out on the last day before they opened the Sky Train at the Miami Airport American Airlines terminal. The walk from security to the Key West gate is 1.25 miles on a hard concrete non-carpeted floor. Ouch.

No running this week. A little biking. I hope to get some miles in this weekend. It’s clear that I won’t be physically ready to do my half-Ironman duathlon events in November. My running isn’t improving quickly enough, and I am not physically capable of bending into the triathlon bike position. My ego won’t let me do the event on a regular road bike, because that gives up 2+ mph due to wind resistance.

At night I have been crashing in the den and listening to music while Jake goes to sleep. I downloaded the new Weezer, Linkin Road and Heart albums, and so far the Heart album is the best of the lot. It’s much less power-ballad poppy than their 1990’s work, which is good. I made some cassette tapes of the albums if anybody wants them. I could burn them to cd, but I choose not to. I’ve also been catching up with some classical and jazz backlog. I’m not crazy about the latest Esperanza Spalding album. It gets a lot of hype as a jazz/soul release with some classical overtones, but it’s a little too shoe-gaze for me. So far so good on the new main speakers, but I don’t get to listen to them much because they aren’t conducive to Jake bedtime and he spends every waking minute in the main room with the TV on in the background.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-56150391559235340322010-09-11T16:54:00.001-07:002010-09-11T17:00:46.776-07:00My party weekend
Jen’s in NYC, and Jake and I are hanging out this weekend and doing guy stuff. Foodwise, that means a lot of Chinese buffet.

Homewise, that means a lot of hanging out in pajamas. I’ve been fiddling around the house, doing externally-appearing non-productive things. One day I replaced all the blown bulbs in the ceiling lights. That took me two hours, and shows no apparent lighting gains.

My big shipment of cables came in from Monoprice.com. I re-wired the main stereo with new thicker high-quality RCA (i.e, red and white plugs) cables. This seems to have decreased the strange interference/hiss that I was getting from the amp on the phono stage setting. None of that audiophile cable cult stuff -- my replacement RCA cables cost $3.50 a pair, but feel much more substantial than the thinner ones that come with the equipment. I may order some Blue Jean Cables speaker cables next. I bought some speakers on eBay, and will pick them up tomorrow. A pair of Celestion A2 floorstanding speakers - $2000 in 1997, now $175.00 on eBay. In my mind, it was cheaper than buying floor stands for my existing 1997 speakers.

I also put together a wall rack in the garage which holds 4 bikes. Glamorous stuff.

On Thursday I bought a six pack of hard apple cider, based on an expected leisurely and fancy poolside weekend. I still have all six. On the other hand, teh chocolate chip cookies I baked (straight out of the Toll House package) are gone.

I took Jake out for disc golf this afternoon with Remy and his Dad Jon. It was 94+ degrees, and Jake didn’t enjoy it that much. I enjoyed it, even though Jon kicked my butt.

Since I don’t have any coverage for Jake, I didn’t get to bike or exercise this weekend. I was really stiff and limpy on Friday, but a little better today.

With Jen gone, the dog has to suck up to me, and he is gamely attempting to do so.

Music of the Moment - Mahler's 7th Symphony, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (Noseda). I'm listening to the cover disc for the September issue of BBC Music Magazine. Since Jake has claimed the living room, I'm listening and typing in the guest room with the small speakers. It's not conducive to large scale orchestral works. That said, it's a fairly intricate and varied work. It's kind of like a singles collection more than an integrated work, but that facilitates listening to it in pieces. It's the opposite of Symphony Fantastique (or Dark Side of the Moon), where you strap into the chair like a Maxell commercial for an interactive listen.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-64400073716099425772010-09-08T19:13:00.001-07:002010-09-08T19:13:39.048-07:00Bachelor, but home
This weekend is a little different than last weekend. Jen is going with her friends to NYC for the weekend, including a hair styling with a “celebrity” hair stylist. Jen’s gone from Thursday through Sunday.

Jake and I will be together again, but this time we’ll be home. That means fewer trips to the ice cream parlor/candy store, because we don’t have the same high quality shop that they had in Covington, GA.

I presume Jake will have a lot of play dates this weekend. I can’t do my normal 6am bike rides, but I’ll see if I can put together some late morning rides. I only rode once in the past 10 days, due to a combination of being out of town and incessant morning rains.

I’m pretty stiff, but I can’t tell if that’s due to bone pain or from sleeping funny. The knee scabs are completely gone, so the only really visible items are the disjointed clavicle and the stiffness on the left side.

Jake is really enjoying school. He’s a little disappointed that his sports endurance is not as strong as the other kids. I let him know that I didn’t get endurance until I was 37.

I’ve got the main stereo fully hooked up, so I can veg out all weekend. I finally got the equalizer hooked up, which helped shove another component into the system. I need Jake out of the house to really enjoy the tunes, because he has 30+ Nanny episodes on the DVR, and I end up having to listen to a mixture of my tunes with a Fran Drescher background in the adjoining room. If anybody needs anything taped (to reel to reel, cassette, cd, or mp3), just let me know.

Music of the Moment

1. Assorted Gary Burton albums. I bought a bunch of Gary Burton albums from 1969 to 1987. You can hear the range of styles, from early fusion (Throb and the Gary Burton/Keith Jarrett album, both of which I snagged for a buck) to later groups with Pat Metheny and Eberhard Weber. It all sounds good, but the later stuff sounds better but isn’t quite as spirited. I’m told the 1990’s stuff is excellent, but I haven’t gotten there yet.

2. Chet Atkins, Teenville (Mono1st pressing, 1960). Another great sounding early Chet Atkins album. $1.00 on eBay!

3. Still working through the Living Stereo classical box set.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-32740638984842823112010-09-06T13:33:00.001-07:002010-09-06T13:33:45.820-07:00Labor Day Weekend
We had plans to take Jake to visit his cousins Dory and Mia (and Jen’s brother Frank and his wife Jamie) in Atlanta over the Labor Day weekend. Jen got really sick, so I ended up going alone with Jake. Jen got better at home, and was able to drag herself to a massage and a round of chick TV.

Jake had an excellent time with his cousins. Pics are at

http://www.facebook.com/p.php?i=1255468761&k=Z41Y4X63S6TFWAE1W1Z4S5PQ2VKCZ34F&oid=1401093318581

We went to the Fernwood science museum in Atlanta, went to Melting Pot for dinner, and the big trip was to Medieval Times. Jake loved it. He also loved the food, which was a fairly tasty baked 1/2 chicken. You are supposed to eat the meal with your hands, but Aunt Jamie knew to bring plastic cutlery.

We visited the local ice cream/candy shop each day, and we ate a bunch of sugar. I didn’t do much exercise, so I have a lot of biking to do this week. I went walking/jogging with Frank one morning. It’s a very hilly area, and my butt and back have hurt all weekend. I don’t know if that is from the climbing, sitting on a pair of coach seat flights or from sleeping with Jake in a 7 year old’s bed. Jake says he’s sore from sleeping in a room with a Nick Jonas poster on the wall.

Jake and Mia also had an athletic workout. They worked out a rig where they would go down the slide, and put a plastic sled at the bottom so they could then launch off the slide and down the hill over the grass. They did it for an hour, and we never had to make a trip to the emergency room.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-40412066008471679932010-09-01T17:22:00.001-07:002010-09-01T17:22:14.537-07:00State of the Vintage Art
Jen came home yesterday, and I told her to close her eyes and come into the guest room to listen to something. That something was Hole’s “Live Through This”, blasting on my new (for me) Akai 4000ds Reel to Reel tape deck. I don’t know why I needed it; I just know that I did. (She said its sounds good, but she could tell it was a tape). State of the art for 1975. I’ve had to order used blank tapes on eBay. New blank tapes sell for $16.00, so I sprung for old used ones for $1.50 each.

We went to the Tears For Fears concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts last night. They’ve aged well, and are impressive live. On the other hand, the facility has terrible acoustics, and is ill-suited for rock concerts.

Jake went to a new GI doctor, and is experimenting with a no-dairy diet. So far so good. He had a good day at school today. Now that he’s improving, Jen is sick with a cold. It’s our family balance.

I’ve had a crazy week of work, and I’ve been too busy to go to physical therapy. Actually, I just haven’t wanted to go to PT. I haven’t biked in two days due to rain. I have the usual soreness and pains, but the knee scab is almost gone. Unfortunately, it seems to get more sensitive as it gets smaller.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-70624595120749167672010-08-29T18:05:00.001-07:002010-08-29T18:05:16.035-07:00Fun before the rain began
I managed to get in a nice 75 mile easy ride this morning between the raindrops. For most South Florida summer days, a little rain is a good thing. I like to remind myself – imagine how brutally humid and hot it would be if it didn’t rain every hour or two.

Yesterday I got in a 40 mile ride. I went back to my normal Saturday bike store ride. The guys were willing to take it easy on me if I wanted, so the pain was self-inflicted. In the afternoon we went to a fund raiser picnic for a few hours before it poured. Later than evening Jen and I got to hang out on the couch and listen to the Kate Bush (Hounds of Love) re-release that came in the mail. It sounds great. Jen then insisted on listening to the first Go Go’s album, Beauty and the Beat. The cd doesn’t sound great, and I was too lazy to go into the garage to get a vinyl copy for comparison, so I instead abandoned ship and took Jake to the bookstore.

As a result of the weekend of riding and the humidity, my whole body aches. I may try a hot tub soak before work tomorrow morning.

I got in my oft-threatened record shop visit this afternoon. Jake had an afternoon playdate, so Jen and I got to take a trip to Fort Lauderdale. It’s a split trip – Dillards for her and Radio-Active Records for me. We spent $60 at the record store, but came home with a decent stack (12) of records. Jen enjoyed it as much as I did, and that’s about the only shopping joy we mutually share. Jen leans toward 80s stuff, which is a little hard for me because I already have much of it in one format or another. However, our Kate Bush listening session led her to agree that vinyl can sound better than cd if done right. She picked out a Kate Bush album and a Kate Bush 12 inch single, and a Modern English album. Just think – if she becomes a high quality stereo music convert, I could get some bad-ass speakers for the living room.

She also picked some oddball records. She picked out a $4.00 sealed album of wild frog sounds in the forest. I have no idea what it sounds like, but the cover is pretty. She also picked up the Broadway cast album of The Wiz, starring Stephanie Mills (not Michael Jackson or Diana Ross). Finally, she got the “Singing Nun” album. I tell myself that if I can listen to Josephine Baker, I can listen to the Singing Nun. We’ll see.

I picked out my usual, which is a trove of different items with no unifying theme. A few jazz albums, some classical, and even a country album. The music of the moment is an eclectic triple vinyl threat:

Gary Burton, Picture This, 1980. An excellent jazz ensemble album. Gary Burton is a vibraphone player, so he’s usually “happy” sounding. I presume it’s hard to make a somber vibraphone record. The album was released on the ECM label, which is known for a Windham Hill kind of clear pure sound, so it’s a good mix. Recommended, although it was never released on cd, so you won’t be able to find it.

Henry Thread gill, Easily Slip Into Another World, 1988. Experimental jazz from one of the founders of “Air” – not the current Air, but the one from the 1970’s. It’s very listenable for an experimental, and not too dissonant. It’s kind of funky from a bass perspective, which is surprising. Recommended, but very hard to find. Threadgill’s new album was in most reviewer Top 10 lists last year, so I’m planning on getting it soon.

Van Cliburn, Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1, 1959 – I found a nice original “shaded dog” Living Stereo original release for $2.99. It’s a little noisy, but some of that may be static from a very deep cleaning. I’m too cheap to buy an anti-static gun for $90.00, because it’s not usually an issue for me. It’s an excellent recording, and is easily available on cd. It’s the album released right after he won his award in Moscow in 1958, and it’s what made him a star.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-14294660532755827322010-08-26T16:43:00.001-07:002010-08-26T16:43:22.977-07:00The new normal
Jake had to come home from school because of a bad tummy. This happened a lot last year, and the last trip to Gainesville was supposed to result in a solution (or at least some suggestions). Of course, by the time I get home from work his stomach has long-since calmed, so I don’t have a full appreciation of the bad phases. I’m really saddened that it started back up. He really likes school, so I know it’s disappointing for him too.

I skipped biking because of the morning rain, and have an early morning hearing tomorrow. I try not to skip two days in a row, because it makes me cranky. Ooops - I forgot that I’m always cranky now. I feel and look like a 45 year old retired running back. Only some people understand that reference, but most people nod sympathetically.

My final cassette deck came in the mail. It’s a Denon 730. It was only $9.99, but it took forever to arrive and required an eBay/PayPal dispute to finally get sent.

I ordered an awesome box of 60 “Living Stereo” Classical music albums through a new Japanese reissue. I’ve been trying out some 1950’s mono classical albums, and they’re not bad. The 1950’s early stereo classical recordings (RCA Living Stereo and “shaded dogs” and Mercury “Living Presence” come to mind) are famous for their great performances and great sound. I met a local audiophile who is into ultra headphone audio, so that should be interesting. I like headphones, but have never sprung for (or experienced) state of the art.

The dog is home after getting fixed. He’ll have the collar on all week, so he’s kind of gawky. It’s very disconcerting when I hear a fast plastic scratching sound in the middle of the night when he itches the collar.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-78132431960499753432010-08-24T18:19:00.001-07:002010-08-24T18:19:37.313-07:00The State of Better Rock Music
It’s got to be hard being a record executive of a certain age. I don’t mean from the “these kids and their music stealing are killing us” perspective; I mean from the “most of the stuff we put out is Auto Tune crap, so we need to put out a few critically acclaimed Rolling Stone/Paste fodder albums, but this is all we have” perspective. Remember when a recording label signed R.E.M. to a kajillion dollar contract in the 1990’s just so they could have a prestige artist? Since the few remaining critically acclaimed major label prestige rock artists (U2, R.E.M., Beck, Weezer, Beastie Boys) only put out an album every few years, the labels have to take a shot on some new Paste-fodder artists and see what sticks.

This week, nothing sticks. First, I listened to the JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys album, Fidelity. It’s Chrissie Hynde – instant credibility. That said, the guy with her sounds like a Welsh version of JT Fortune (the guy who won the Rock Star TV show and got to sing for INXS) mixed with some Ben Folds. Every second that doesn’t sound like a Chrissie Hynde solo album detracts from the record (although the lyrics are pretty good). It’s OK, but not as good as it should have been (and not as good as a current Pretenders effort).

I also downloaded the new album by Ray Montagne and the Pariah Dogs. It’s folkish with a little bit of a funky rhythmic beat. (an acoustic Little Feat??) I never liked Wilco, and I don’t like this. It’s well recorded, but almost too much so.

On the brighter side, I read that a live album from a Yaz 2008 reunion tour (that I didn’t know about) comes out next month.

Two very busy days of work. Jake loves school – so much so that he’s exhausted at bedtime. The dog is getting fixed today. Bummer for him.

Not a lot of bone pain today. My lungs still aren’t perfect. During my all-day mediation yesterday, my client (a physician) noticed that I start to wheeze as the day goes on. I’m supposed to try a longer group run tomorrow evening. That thought gave me all the excuse I needed to hop off the treadmill this evening after only 15 minutes of slow miserable jogging.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-3959177600668140952010-08-23T18:04:00.001-07:002010-08-23T18:04:30.518-07:00The Good Stuff
Today was the first day of 4th grade. Jake’s friends have all come back into town after their summer vacations, so we spent the weekend with Jake and his friends. I had a full work day today, so I didn’t get to go to the first day of school. I normally love the first day, because it’s a good chance to see what plastic surgeries the mommies got over the summer. I feel cheated (although I’m told that the most noteworthy surgery was male).

I went for a long and eventful bike ride yesterday. We got lost a few times, and ultimately one of my friends got an unrecoverable flat. Word to the wise – if you’re going to ride a bike with oddball size wheels, make sure you have the correct replacement tube. On the other hand, on the two hour trip back home I had the inspired idea to stop at the Frosted Lemonade truck in Coconut Grove. It was a world-class experience. Truly the perfect break at the perfect time.

There was supposed to be a record store visit yesterday, but I gave it up so we could have dim sum with friends. That was worth it. On the other hand, I allocated time to watch the Aston Villa game on TV, and they got crushed 6-0 by Newcastle. That wasn’t worth it.

Music of the Moment – Gerry Rafferty, City to City (1978, on the original vinyl). I frequently use Baker Street as a test song to try out stereo components. The sax solo is one of the more memorable moments in 1970’s album oriented radio (“AOR”).
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764187419456563305.post-30693431820694536752010-08-20T17:51:00.001-07:002010-08-20T17:51:32.423-07:00Ready for the week to be over
It was hard couple of days. I’m achy all over – mostly back pain (from the scapula) and gut pain (from the surgery). The PT also kicks my butt, as if I need that. I’m athletically dejected, too. My normal bike store ride has become so competitive that they’ve started racing from the outset. Neither my body nor my ego can accept having to struggle to stay on the back ten minutes into the ride. It’s gotten so bad I’ve decided to switch my allegiance to the ride sponsored by the competing bike store. Just to top off my mood, I have lots of work BS to deal with, which has taken away some of the fun of a job where you already spend all day listening to other people’s problems.

Jen’s feeling a little under the weather, too. The correct prescription would be two days of backyard sun and relaxation. Unfortunately, the weather report calls for rain, and I’m the only family member skilled in the art of indoor home relaxation. I am looking forward to another long and leisurely bike ride on Sunday morning, so a lot of rain would be a blow to my zen.

I’m hanging out on the couch, trying out my new DAC. A DAC is a “digital to analog converter”, and converts the digital signal from your computer (via the USB port) into a two channel analog signal that can be plugged into your amplifier. It’s a better alternative to using the mini-headphone output jack on the computer, because the sound amplification circuits on most computers really stink.. Like all nerdy stereo stuff, a DAC can be very expensive (i.e, thousands). I spent $35.00 for mine (a Behringer A202). It does seem to noticeably improve the sound of computer-output music. I’ll get a nicer DAC when I someday upgrade my 15 year old speakers. No rush.

Music of the Moment – Steve Miller Band, Bingo (2010). The new album is mostly blues-guitar rock, but not in a muddy way It’s not as pop or synthesizer based as the mid-1970’s popular stuff. I had just downloaded it on Zune Pass and figured it would be a good test. Meanwhile, the record store in Ft. Lauderdale posted in Facebook that they just got in 300 new (for them) used lps, so that may require a visit. Meanwhile, Jen and I ordered the special remastered colored vinyl pressing of Kate Bush’s Hound of Love. She wanted it more than I did. I do realize I’ve now contradicted everything I said in the last blog entry about not being an audio cultist, but the remastering is supposed to be something special. In any event, consistency is a vice of the small-minded.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
